According to Chair of the Funeral Planning Committee Education Minister Dr. Jacqui Quinn Leandro; the committee held its second meeting today at which it was decided that the Service of Thanksgiving will be held at the Deanery on Thursday October 11, 2012 at 1:00p.m.
According to Quinn Leandro the Deanery grounds, which have both sentimental and religious significance for Dame Gwendolyn, will be transformed into a Sanctuary for the special occasion.
Public viewing of the body will be at Dame Gwendolyn’s former residence at Old Parham Road from 11:00 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Tributes include Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer; a message from leader of the Opposition Lester Bird, Attorney General Justin Simon, Q.C; St. John’s Cathedral Eucharist Choir, the Youth Choir, Partners of the Americas, the Antigua Labour Party Choir, APUA; Gender Affairs and Claudette C P Peters.
The service will be conducted by the Very Rev. Rudolph Smithen, Dean of the Cathedral Parish of St. John. The sermon will be preached by the Right Rev. Bishop Leroy Errol Brooks, Bishop of the Northeastern Caribbean and Aruba; and the Eulogy delivered by Mrs. Euline Tonge Robin, daughter.
Dame Gwendolyn will be laid to rest at the St. John’s Public Cemetery beside her late husband Assistant Superintendent of Police Edgar T. Tonge. She will receive a 3 volley rifle salute from an all female police firing party.
Flags will be flown at half mast throughout the nation on the day of the funeral.
