The Department of Youth Affairs is pleased to announce the successful participation of two young Antiguan and Barbudans in the United Nation’s Caribbean Sub-Regional Consultation on Violence against Children held on May 14th and 15th, 2012. The two young people, Shem Timothy and Kirdia Smith, travelled to Kingston, Jamaica along with Youth Officer Desiree Weston-Williams where the consultation took place.
The Consultation was part of an agenda to promote
- The development of a national strategy to prevent and respond to all forms of violence
- The introduction of legislation to prohibit all forms of violence against children
- The consolidation of data and research to inform progress in this area
The aim of the meeting was to advance the implementation of the UN study recommendations through a widely participatory process in which high level authorities on children’s rights, parliamentarians, civil society representatives, the media, international organisations and children and young people were able share and reflect on issues related to enhancing the protection of children against violence.
